Let’s Talk About Respect: Upcoming PRS Advisory Group

What does it mean to feel respected?

How do you know when someone values what you have to say? And what makes you feel important?

These are some of the questions we’ll explore at our next CLA PRS Advisory Group meeting.

The PRS Advisory Group gives people receiving CLA services an opportunity to come together, share their thoughts and experiences, and talk about topics that are important to them. Our upcoming discussion will focus on something that affects all of us: respect.

What Does Respect Mean to You?
Respect can mean different things to different people.

It might mean being listened to when you have something to say. Being included in decisions. Having people ask what you want instead of assuming. Being spoken to kindly. Having your choices honored. Or simply knowing that someone cares about what you think and how you feel.

During our discussion, we want to hear directly from participants about what respect looks and feels like to them.

We’ll talk about questions such as:
  • What does respect mean to you?
  • How do you want people to treat you?
  • How do you know when someone thinks you’re important?
  • What does someone say to you that makes you feel important?
  • What makes you feel listened to?
  • What makes you feel included?
  • What do you want people to know about you?
  • What makes you, you?

Words Matter, Too
We’ll also spend some time talking about the words people use and how those words can make us feel.

That may include discussing the R-word, what participants think when they hear it, and what they would rather people say. But most importantly, we want participants to tell us what respectful language means to them.

There are no right or wrong answers. The purpose of the conversation is to listen and learn from each other.

Making Space for Every Voice
One of the goals of the PRS Advisory Group is to create more opportunities for the people CLA serves to share their opinions, preferences, and ideas.

And having a voice doesn't look the same for everyone. Participants are encouraged to take part in whatever way works best for them.

Sometimes simply asking “What do you think?” or “What is important to you?” can open the door to a meaningful conversation.

Join the Conversation
We hope participants will join us for this important—and hopefully fun—conversation about respect, feeling valued, and what it means to know that you matter.
